Our History
In 2022, the City of Detroit, The Greening of Detroit, DTE Energy, American Forests, and other partners launched the Detroit Tree Partnership (DTP) to deliver the health, economic, and environmental benefits of trees to Detroit. The Nature Conservancy has since joined the partnership, strengthening collective efforts to expand impact across the city. The partnership prioritizes planting trees in historically disinvested neighborhoods to ensure that residents who have been most impacted by environmental inequities can fully access and benefit from a healthier urban forest.
Through DTP, partners are working to plant 75,000 trees, train and place 300 Detroiters in tree-care and urban-forestry careers, and invest $30 million in Detroit neighborhoods. Beyond tree planting, DTP emphasizes meaningful community engagement with residents, block clubs, and local leaders to advance and implement Tree Equity across the city.
Our program aims to address employment barriers by providing training opportunities for Detroit residents, especially those with barriers to employment, paving the way for full-time, year-round employment in the tree care industry.
DTP is not a standalone project; we are a forward-thinking partnership actively seeking additional collaborations to stimulate the local economy, including through the development of local nurseries, the reuse of local urban wood, and the development of neighborhood projects throughout the city.
The Detroit Tree Partnership hopes to grow a holistic collaborative across Detroit (and beyond), we invite anyone who loves trees or wants to learn to love them to join us and grow a healthier, more sustainable city.
